What a website audit checks, and how to read the results

A plain-language guide to the six things a website audit looks at, what the results mean, and which fixes to tackle first.

What a website audit checks, and how to read the results

Key takeaways

  • A website audit checks six areas: speed, mobile experience, Google visibility, enquiry paths, tracking and technical health.
  • Fix whatever stops people from contacting you first. Polish comes later.
  • Many problems are cheap to fix once you know they exist.

Most business owners can tell when a website feels slow or dated. Fewer know which problems are costing them enquiries. A good audit turns that gut feeling into a short list of fixes, in the right order. Here is what we look at when we audit a site, and how to read what comes back.

1. Speed

Visitors on mobile data will not wait long for a page to load. We measure how long the main content takes to appear, and what slows it down. The usual culprits are oversized images, too many plugins and low-cost hosting.

In the results, look for the load time of your home page and your most important service page, plus the heaviest files on each. Compressing images alone often makes a visible difference.

2. Mobile experience

Most visitors in Kenya browse on a phone, so the mobile version is your real website. We check text size, buttons, menus, pop-ups and forms on a phone screen.

A common finding: the phone number is an image or plain text, so visitors cannot tap to call. That takes minutes to fix.

3. Google visibility

We check whether Google can find and index your pages, whether each page has a clear title and description, and whether the words on the page match what customers search for. If you serve customers locally, we also look at your Google Business Profile. Typical findings:

  • Pages blocked from Google by mistake.
  • Missing or duplicated page titles.
  • Thin service pages, or several services crammed onto one page.

4. Enquiry paths

This is where an audit pays for itself. We follow the steps a customer takes to reach you: calling, sending a WhatsApp message and filling in a form. Then we test each one.

Broken contact forms are more common than you might think. So are forms that send enquiries to an old email address nobody reads.

5. Tracking

If you run ads, or want to know which pages bring enquiries, you need tracking that works. We check Google Analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking for forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks. Without it, you cannot tell which marketing spend is working.

6. Technical health

Broken links, a missing or expired security certificate, error pages, outdated plugins and security warnings in the browser. None of these is exciting, but each one chips away at trust, with visitors and with Google.

How to prioritise the fixes

A long list of problems can feel like a lot. Work through it in this order:

  1. Anything that stops people from contacting you, such as broken forms or a phone number you cannot tap.
  2. Anything that stops Google from seeing your pages.
  3. Speed on mobile.
  4. Tracking, so you can measure what happens next.
  5. Everything else.

Many fixes take minutes. Others, like rewriting service pages, take longer but keep paying off for years.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a website audit take?

It depends on the size of the site. A small business website with a handful of pages can be reviewed much sooner than an online shop with hundreds of products.

Do I need to give you access to my website?

No. Most checks work from the outside, the way Google and your visitors see the site. For tracking checks, access to Google Analytics helps.

Does it matter if my site is built on Wix, Shopify or WordPress?

The checks are the same on every platform. Only the way some fixes are applied is different.

Is the free site audit really free?

Yes. You get the report whether or not you work with us afterward.
